Know all about Osman Hadi: Bangladeshi student uprising leader who died in Singapore hospital
Popular student leader from Bangladesh, Sharif Osman Hadi died at a hospital in Singapore on Thursday. He was shifted to the super specialty hospital in the country after being shot in the head in Dhaka on December 12. He was supposed to contest the upcoming General Elections in Bangladesh in February. THe leader of the Inqilab Manch was actively involved in the student uprising in the country, which led to the ouster of Sheikh Hasina from power in 2024.
New Delhi: Sharif Osman Hadi, a Bangladesh student leader from the 2024 uprising, which saw the ouster of Sheikh Hasina from power, has reportedly died at a hospital in Singapore. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Singapore, the man died on Thursday, after sustaining injuries in an assassination attempt.
Hadi evacuated to Singapore after attack in Bangladesh
According to a report in the Hindustan Times, Hadi was airlifted to Singapore after an assassination attempt in Bangladesh. He was moved to the Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit of the Singapore General Hospital on December 15. He was moved to the hospital after being shot in the head in Dhaka, Bangladesh's capital.
The Singaporean Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement which read, "Despite the best efforts of the doctors from SGH and the National Neuroscience Institute, Mr Hadi succumbed to his injuries on 18 December 2025."
As of now, efforts are on to repatriate the body to Bangladesh as early as possible. The authorities in Singapore are working with the Bangladesh High Commission to send the body back to Osman's home country as soon as possible.
Hadi was shot by assailants in Dhaka on December 12, while he was travelling in a battery-operated rickshaw. The attack happened on Culvert Road in the Paltan area. After the attack he was rushed to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital and later transferred to Evercare Hospital. However after no improvement in his condition, the student leader was airlifted to Singapore.
Who was Osman Hadi?
Osman Hadi was a member of the Inqilab Manch, a group which was involved in the anti-Hasina protests in the country. He was also set to contest the upcoming elections in the country. The country is set to see General Elections in February. He was in fact campaigning for the polls, when he was attacked. The man was set to contest the polls from the Dhaka-8 constituency as an Independent.
The Inquilab Manch came into focus last July when it led the uprising against the Sheikh Hasina government. This group, often seen as a radical outfit, also aimed at dismantling the Awami League. The status of this party, as of now, is that it has been disbanded by the Yunus-led government in the country and has also been barred from contesting the elections. This despite the fact that they were an active part of the student uprising last year.
Will probe assassination: Yunus
Following the death of Osman Hadi, the Bangladesh interim government led by Muhammad Yunus has vowed to launch a probe into the assassination of the student leader. He was quoted as saying, "Today, I came before you with very heartbreaking news. Sharif Osman Hadi, the fearless frontline fighter of the July Uprising and spokesperson of the Inqilab Mancha, is no more among us."
The interim leader of the country also declared 1-day mourning in memory of the late student leader.
Yunus however requested the people to show restraint and not indulge in vandalism and protests following the death of Osman. He went on to describe Hadi as an "enemy to the defeated forces and fascist terrorists", referring to the deposed Sheikh Hasina's party, the Awami League. He warned that the "evil efforts to frighten the revolutionaries will be completely thwarted."
