The Nobel Committee recognized Machado's tireless work for democratic rights and a peaceful transition.
New Delhi: The recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize this year, Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado has dedicated it to the people of her country and US President Donald Trump.
Reason behind dedicating it to Donald Trump
Machado dedicated the Nobel Peace Prize to President Trump for his "decisive support" for her country's pro-democracy movement. She took X and wrote, "This recognition of the struggle of all Venezuelans is a boost to conclude our task: to conquer Freedom."
She added, "We are on the threshold of victory and today, more than ever, we count on President Trump, the people of the United States, the peoples of Latin America, and the democratic nations of the world as our principal allies to achieve Freedom and democracy. I dedicate this prize to the suffering people of Venezuela and to President Trump for his decisive support of our cause!" Meanwhile, Trump has shared a screenshot of Machado's X post on his Truth Social platform.
Machado's support for Trump's military campaign
While declaring Machado the winner, the Nobel Committee cited her "tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy."
Notably, she has supported Trump's ongoing campaign of military pressure on Nicolás Maduro, the President of Venezuela. The US has deployed a major naval force near the country, calling it a "necessary measure" towards a democratic transition in Venezuela.
The White House Communications chief, Steven Cheung, has slammed the Nobel Committee for their decision to snub Trump. Taking to X, he said, "President Trump will continue making peace deals, ending wars, and saving lives. He has the heart of a humanitarian, and there will never be anyone like him who can move mountains with the sheer force of his will." The US President is expected to issue a statement on this later.
