'PM Modi dialled Putin and asked for Ukraine strategy': NATO chief on US tariff impact

The NATO chief claimed that the US President Donald Trump's decision of imposing 50 per cent tariff on India for purchasing Russian oil had a "big impact" on Moscow.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi dialled Russian President Vladimir Putin and asked him to explain his strategy on Ukraine after Trump administration's tariff move, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte said on Friday.

The NATO chief claimed that the US President Donald Trump's decision of imposing 50 per cent tariff on India for purchasing Russian oil had a "big impact" on Moscow.

The US in August imposed 50 per cent tariff on Indian goods, including 25 per cent additional duty for New Delhi's energy ties with Moscow. India called the move "unfair, unreasonable and unjustified". The US has accused India of fuelling Moscow's war in Ukraine by coninuting to purchase Russian oil.

"This (tariff) immediately impacts Russia because that means Delhi is now on the phone with Vladimir Putin in Moscow, and Narendra Modi is asking him, 'I support you, but could you explain me your strategy because I have now been hit by these 50 per cent tariffs by the United States'," he told CNN on Friday on the sidelines of the UNGA session in New York.

Modi-Putin talks

Last week, Prime Minister Modi had a telephonic conversation with the Russian President. During the call, the Prime Minister reiterated India's "full support for the peaceful resolution" of the Ukraine conflict, according to PM Modi's office.

Earlier on September 1, the two leaders met on the sidelines of the SCO summit in China's Tianjin. The due travelled in the same vehicle and held informal talks while heading to the venue of their bilateral meeting. Putin reportedly waited for 10 minutes as he wanted to travel together with the Prime Minister to the SCO summit destination.
