New Delhi: The strained ties between India and the US amid tariff dispute and New Delhi's growing proximity with Russia and China are being seen as a major shift in geopolitical dynamics by the Western media. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Russian President Vladimir Putin and China's Xi Jinping's cordial picture at the recently concluded Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit has set the momentum for "the new world order", which will probably see Asia's dominance.

PM Modi, Putin and Xi came together for the SCO summit, sending out a clear message to the US and representing the countries that are bearing the brunt of US President Donald Trump's steep tariffs. At the SCO summit, the bonhomie among the three leaders were at full display as they were captured exchanging smiles, holding hands, and also bursting into laughter.

The camaraderie among the leaders caught the attention of Western media, with US political commentator Van Jones saying it should "send a chill down the spine of every American."

"We are going to look back on today historically as a very big deal because that image of Xi Jinping with Putin, with Modi from India, with the leader of Iran, with the leader of North Korea, that should send a chill down the spine of every American," Jones said on CNN.

He described the gathering as a sign of a "new world order", where the West finds itself increasingly boxed in by a multi-polar global landscape, saying it is "not good for the US". "That is a new world order. They call it a multipolar world. I call it the West is now in a box," he said.

How US media viewed Modi-Xi-Putin bonhomie

The New York Times said that PM Modi sought to convey a message that it has other "important friends", including China, if the Trump administration continues to single out India with punitive tariffs. "Mr Modi sought to show that India has other important friends - including China, regardless of an unresolved border dispute - if the Trump administration chooses to continue alienating New Delhi with tariffs," the New York-based newspaper said.

CNN noted that the The SCO summit, initially conceived as a regional forum in Central Asia, has grown in size and influence, representing an emerging "challenge" to US global leadership
