At least 3 dead, 9 injured in smoke grenade, knife attacks in Taiwan's Taipei; security increased

New Delhi: In a shocking incident in Taipei, the capital of Taiwan, smoke grenade and knife attacks have killed at least two people. The incident, as per the country's fire department, took place at two metro stations and the suspect also died after falling from a building.

What happened in Taipei?

According to news agency AFP quoting Taipei City Fire Department official, "Three people were confirmed dead including the suspect." Earlier, Taiwan's Premier Cho Jung-tai reportedly said, "Unfortunately, three people in the two locations are currently in a state of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, and another five people have suffered injuries from stab wounds and blunt force trauma to various parts of their bodies."

Cho also informed that the suspect, wearing a mask, threw "five or six gasoline bombs or smoke grenades” at Taipei Main Station metro. Security measures have been increased in the country and he added, "Currently, all important locations, including railway stations, highways, subway stations and airports are maintaining a high level of alert and vigilance."

Who is the perpetrator?

According to reports, the perpetrator has been identified as a 27-year-old man named Chang Wen, who used a knife and smoke grenades during the attack. He reportedly first threw a smoke grenade near the underground exit of Taipei Main subway station. Then he carried out stabbings on both the first and fourth floors of a bustling shopping area. Later, he fled to a nearby building and fell from the sixth floor, dying on the spot.
