Taliban overhauls Afghanistan's education system, bans books written by women

The Taliban have banned several books from University courses in the country. These books are written by women and the government of the country feels that these are not in sync with the sharia laws that the nation follows. The Taliban had already banned women from pursuing education beyond Class 6 and now this new law is a fresh example of the oppression that they face under the Taliban regime in Afghanistan.

New Delhi: The Taliban government in Afghanistan has completely overhauled the education system in the country. Soon after coming to power, they had banned women and girls from attending school after grade 6. Now they have come up with a new set of rules which ban Universities from teaching books authored by women.

More than 100 books pulled off University library shelves

The Taliban have banned more than 140 books written by women. This means that these books will no longer be part of the University syllabus in the country. The Taliban names books like, "Safety in the Chemical Laboratory" among the 680 books which are texts of concern due to "anti-Sharia" and Taliban policies.

The government has also suspended as many as 18 subjects from the University syllabus. These were reportedly deemed as being "in conflict with Sharia law and also the system's policy."

The new rules of the Taliban government have impacted several aspects of the common people's life in the country, especially the women of the country. While women were already banned from pursuing education beyond class 6, one of the few remaining avenues for them, which was midwifery training courses, was also closed for them in mid-2024.

Courses banned by Taliban

Apart from the ban on books written by women, the Taliban have also banned 18 courses in the Universities of the country. Of the 18 banned courses, 6 were related to women. These included, Gender and Development, The Role of Women in Communication, and Women’s Sociology.

According to a Taliban spokesperson, from the Ministry of Higher Education said that the decision to ban the courses and books in the Universities of the country was made by a panel of "religious scholars and experts."
