According to a US-based rights group, thousands of protesters have been killed so far in the deadly crackdown on the unrest against clerical rule in Iran.
New Delhi: In what could escalate the ongoing tension between the US and the Islamic regime in Iran, the Iranian state television appeared to issue an open threat to US President Donald Trump by airing an image of him from the 2024 assassination attempt at a campaign rally. The threat comes as Trump is weighing a possible military strike against Iran.
Iranian state broadcaster Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting aired the footage featuring a picture of the US President from the July 2024 campaign rally in Pennsylvania where he was shot and wounded. The footage aired by the Iranian state TV also had a message for Trump that read: "This time, it (the bullet) won't miss", according to reports by AFP and the New York Post.
Trump's repeated military attack threats to Iran
This comes as Trump had repeatedly threatened Iran with military intervention if the Islamic regime in Iran led by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei continues its deadly crackdown against protesters. Tehran is seeking to deter the US President's repeated threats to intervene on behalf of anti-government protesters.
Iran has been witnessing widespreads protests since December, with the protesters hitting the streets in large numbers against the Khamenei regime over the dwindling economy and soaring cost of living. According to a US-based rights group, thousands of protesters have been killed so far in the deadly crackdown on the unrest against clerical rule.
Iran stopped crackdown on protests?
The US President on Wednesday said that he has been told that killings in the Iranian government's crackdown on the protests were subsiding and that he believes there is currently no plan for large-scale executions. He, however, did not rule out potential US military action and said he was adopting a wait-and-see posture toward the crisis.
His remarks came a day after he told CBS News that the US would act if Iran began hanging protesters. This came after Iran prosecutors said that authorities would give capital punishment to some suspects arrested over recent demonstrations. "We will take very strong action if they do such a thing," said Trump.
