Trumps very strong action warning for Iran over threatened hanging of protesters
Iranian authorities are likely to hang a 26-year-old man today in what would be the first execution in connection with the ongoing nationwide protests against the Islamic regime.
New Delhi: US President Donald Trump warned Iran of "very strong action" if it hangs any protesters as part of its violent crackdown on the protests that a US-based rights group claimed has left nearly 2,000 people dead.
Iranian authorities are likely to hang a 26-year-old man today in what would be the first execution in connection with the ongoing nationwide protests against the Islamic regime, led by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The Iranian government had earlier warned protesters of capital punishment.
Erfan Soltani to be hanged today?
Erfan Soltani, who was arrested on January 8 for participating in the widespread protest against the Islamic regime, is scheduled to be hanged today. Soltani's family members were informed about his death sentence on January 11, according to reports from human rights groups and media outlets, including Jfeed. "His family was informed that he has been sentenced to death and that the execution is due to be carried out on January 14,” Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO) quoted a source as saying.
Trump's warning for Iran
The demonstrations that have posed a threat to the clerical leadership have drawn the support of the US President who has repeatedly warned the Islamic regime of America's intervention. Trump had earlier told the protester in Iran that "help is on the way".
The US President on Tuesday told CBS News that the US would act if Iran began hanging protesters. This came after Iran prosecutors said that authorities would give capital punishment to some suspects arrested over recent demonstrations.
"We will take very strong action if they do such a thing," said the American leader, who has repeatedly threatened Iran with military intervention.
"When they start killing thousands of people -- and now you're telling me about hanging. We'll see how that's going to work out for them," Trump said.
Trump had earlier taken to his social media platform Truth Social to urge protested to "keep protesting". "I have cancelled all meetings with Iranian Officials until the senseless killing of protesters STOPS. HELP IS ON ITS WAY."
