‘US must ensure Maduro’s safety’: China on capture of Venezuela President

Announcing his capture on Truth on Saturday, US President Donald Trump announced that the US "successfully carried out a "large-scale' strike against Venezuela and Maduro, both of whom were captured and flown out of the Country.

Beijing: A day after the US attacked Venezuela, captured Nicolas Maduro and took him to New York, China on Sunday released a statement saying that Washington must immediately release the President and resolve the crisis through dialogue.

US must ensure Maduro’s safety: China

Releasing a statement, Beijing said that the US must ensure the personal safety of Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. It was observed that Maduro’s deportation from Venezuela violated international law and the norm.

“China calls on the US to ensure the personal safety of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, release them at once, stop toppling the government of Venezuela,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement. It called the strike by the US in Venezuela a “clear violation of international law”.

UN expresses concerns

Meanwhile, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres also expressed concern over the increase in tensions between the US and Venezuela that resulted in the capture of Maduro, calling the incident a “dangerous precedent”.

A statement by his office said that the secretary general is “deeply alarmed by the recent escalation in Venezuela, culminating with today’s United States military action in the country, which has potential worrying implications for the region.” Guetteres added that he is “deeply concerned that the rules of international law have not been respected.

Charges against Maduro, his wife

Maduro and his wife were earlier indicted by a New York court on charges of narco-terrorism and conspiracy to possess destructive weapons. As per US Attorney General Pamela Bondi said in a post on X that the Venezuelan President and his wife have been indicted in the Southern District of New York. “They will soon face the full wrath of American justice on American soil in American courts,” Bondi was quoted as saying in the media.
