New Delhi: US President Donald Trump has been awarded inaugural FIFA Peace Prize by the footballing body's president Gianni Infantino.
The chief of FIFA called Trump his 'close friend' as the later was awarded on Friday during the 2026 World Cup draw in Washington, D.C. Trump was given the award before the draw of teams into groups for next year's World Cup in the US, Canada and Mexico.
Trump, while accepting the award, said, "This is truly one of the great honors of my life. And beyond awards, we saved millions and millions of lives." He added, "So many different wars that we were able to end, in some cases just before they started. It was going to be bad, but we got it done. I want to thank, by the way, my family — my great First Lady, Melania.”
FIFA, in its words, has introduced the prize "to reward individuals who have taken exceptional and extraordinary actions for peace and by doing so have united people across the world."
According to FIFA, every year, the Peace Prize would be awarded "to individuals who, through their unwavering commitment and their special actions, have helped to unite people all over the world in peace and consequently deserve a special and unique recognition."
FIFA president Gianni Infantino, during the ceremony, said, "A leader must care about the well-being of peoples, we want to unite peoples and Mr. President, you deserve this first prize for what you have accomplished and achieved. And you can always count on my support and that of the football community."
