Who was Rouzbeh Vadi, the nuclear scientist executed by Iran for spying for Mossad?

Rouzbeh Vadi, an Iranian nuclear physicist, was executed on August 6, 2024, for allegedly spying for Israel's Mossad. The Iranian government claimed he leaked sensitive information about nuclear facilities like Fordow and Natanz.

New Delhi: Iran, on August 6, executed a person named Rouzbeh Vadi. He was reportedly a nuclear physicist who was accused of spying for Israel. The execution has attracted citicisims from domestic and international human rights groups. It has been said by some organisations that the process of finding him guilty was not at all transparent, and he was allegedly tortured.

Who was Rouzbeh Vadi?

As has been mentioned, Rouzbeh Vadi was reportedly a nuclear physicist. He was around 40 years old and had a PhD in Reactor Engineering from Amir Kabir University of Technology. According to reports, he worked at the Nuclear Science and Technology Research Institute which is linked with Iran's Atomic Energy Organisation.

According to Iran Human Rights Organization, the government arrested Vadi about a year and a half ago. Later, the Revolutionary Court sentenced him to death for allegedly spying for Israel. As per the Iranian government's allegations, he gave the Israeli spy unit Mossad sensitive classified information. The Iranian Supreme Court upheld his conviction and Vadi was executed.

In 2012, he reportedly published a scientific paper with two prominent Iranian nuclear scientists, Ahmad Zolfaqar and Abdolhamid Minouchehr, both killed in Iran's war with Israel in 2025. According to an alleged confession video of Vadi, he said, "Key facilities were Fordow and Natanz (uranium enrichment plants), for which I sent information. I told them I knew this and that about Fordow, and they (Mossad agents) told me to send everything. The entry and exit of nuclear material into the Uranium Conversion Facility (UCF) and Fuel Manufacturing Plant (FMP) were very important to them."

According to the allegations of the Iranian government, Vadi met with Mossad agents five times in Vienna. They asked the nuclear physicist to open a cryptocurrency account so that they could pay him for his services. Mossad allegedly promised him a foreign passport should he complete a long-term collaboration.
