New York: Days after being elected as New York mayor, Zohran Mamdani has announced that he and his wife are ready to move to the mayor’s residence, coming January. Announcing the decision, he said that the same was taken keeping in mind the safety of the family and to be able to fully focus on the affordable agenda for the people of the city.
Taking to social media, Mamdani wrote, “My wife Rama and I have decided to move into Gracie Mansion in January." He also wrote about how how special their home in Astoria is and how the neighbourhood will "always live inside" him.
"This decision came down to our family's safety and the importance of dedicating all of my focus on enacting the affordability agenda New Yorkers voted for.We will miss it all - the endless Adeni chai, the spirited conversations in Spanish, Arabic, and every language in between, the aromas of seafood and shawarma drifting down the block," he added further.
During his campaign, Mamdani had promised affordability and housing stability. All set to become New York’s youngest Mayor for last 100 years, he won the election by a huge margin. He has also been receiving a huge criticism for living in a subsidised house. It is believed that Mamdani is currently paying $2,300 or Rs 2,00,000 for his one-bedroom apartment. Despite earning $142,000, or Rs 1,27,60,000 a year.
Gracie Mansion on the other hand, offers a nice view of the East River from the veranda. Apart from this, there is an entertaining room, a sitting and dining room with wallpaper depicting Parisian gardens. Here mayors can eat their meals, which are prepared by a Gracie chef. The mayor’s mansion is heavily secured, which makes almost all mayors shift to the place.
