All wheel drive is a feature which is rarely available in India but it is something that is useful in tricky situations while making the vehicle a little more capable. AWD is popular in countries with a lot of snow as it ensures more grip on the vehicle on slippery surfaces.

While not as capable as 4x4 system, there are different ways to employ an AWD system. Some cars use physical clutches while others use the braking system and traction control to manipulate which wheel gets the power. Here are 5 AWD cars for sale in India which are highly capable.

Jeep is synonymous with off-roaders and even their most affordable offering, the Compass, comes with a pretty capable AWD system. The Compass comes with a 2.0L diesel engine, and the AWD versions are only available with the 9-speed automatic transmission. There are various traction modes as well and it is pretty capable. Earlier, there was an even more extreme Trailhawk version available as well but that got discontinued pretty quickly due to poor demand.

The Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara AllGrip has been on sale for quite a long but nobody really knows about it. It comes with a 1.5L K-Series NA petrol engine paired to a 5-speed manual transmission, which is extremely reliable. The AllGrip system is pretty capable too and has proved to be pretty robust when the going gets tough. Put on a set of good tyres and there is not much that can stop the Grand Vitara. It is not an all-out off-roader, but is a little more capable than all the other hatchbacks which like to call themselves SUVs.

The Mahindra XUV7OO also comes with an AWD system in the top two variants of the vehicle. It is only available with the 2.2L diesel engine paired with the 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. The AWD is pretty capable on the XUV7OO and one can also lock the centre differential to force the rear wheels to come into action.

The Hyundai Tucson is a proper premium vehicle. It comes with an AWD system called the H-Trac on the top-of-the-line variant. It is only available with the 2.0L diesel engine which is paired to an 8-speed torque converter automatic. There are multiple modes and also a way to lock the centre differential. The AWD offered in India is much more capable than the ones offered abroad because they are not limited by the dual clutches which heat up quite a bit.

Both the Tiguan and Skoda Kodiaq share platforms and that is why we have combined the two. Both cars come with a very capable Haldex AWD system, which underpins almost all Volkswagen vehicles. Both cars feature a 2.0L turbo petrol EA888 engine paired to a 7-speed DSG. The AWD system also gets different off-road modes which alter the traction control and they are decently capable if you want to go to the wilderness.
