Citroen has updated its Basalt coupe-SUV range in India with the new Basalt X line-up, bringing design changes, price cuts, and an in-car conversational assistant that feels straight out of a sci-fi movie. The launch comes just ahead of the festive season, making the mid-size SUV segment even busier than it already is.

I’ve always seen Citroen trying to be different with its quirky designs, but the Basalt X adds a tech-first approach that might appeal to buyers tired of generic SUVs. Pre-bookings opened on August 22 for ₹11,000, and deliveries will begin around the festive period.

Prices trimmed, features added

The biggest news is the price drop. The Basalt X range now starts at ₹7.95 lakh, undercutting some rivals in the segment. The mid-level Plus trims range between ₹9.42 lakh and ₹12.07 lakh, while the fully loaded Max trims are priced between ₹11.63 lakh and ₹12.90 lakh. That’s nearly a ₹1 lakh reduction from earlier prices. Optional extras include a dual-tone roof finish for ₹21,000 and a 360-degree camera system for ₹25,000.

Inside, the Max trim gets a reworked dashboard with bronze accents, tan-and-black upholstery, and leatherette wrapping. There’s also a digital instrument cluster, ventilated front seats, ambient lighting, and cruise control. The new "X” badging on the tailgate is the only visual update outside, but it’s enough to distinguish it from the regular Basalt.

CARA: India’s first in-car conversational assistant

The standout feature is CARA, Citroen’s AI-powered digital assistant that understands commands in 52 languages and can even switch mid-conversation. Unlike voice assistants that often frustrate you, this one is designed to respond naturally to context. Say "I’m tired,” and it might suggest a rest stop.

CARA integrates with navigation maps, tracks flights, checks stock updates, and can also control car functions like AC pre-conditioning or door locks. For safety, it includes a voice-triggered SOS mode and crash response. Stellantis says India is the first market to get CARA, showcasing the country’s growing role in the company’s global software roadmap.

Powertrain and performance

There are no changes under the hood. Entry trims continue with an 82hp, 1.2-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. Higher variants use the 110hp, 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine, paired with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Citroen claims the Basalt X continues to offer strong second-row comfort, adjustable thigh support through its smart tilt cushion, and the company’s well-known "flying carpet” ride from the Advanced Comfort suspension.

What it means for buyers

With features like ventilated seats, wireless charging, connected tech, and the conversational CARA assistant, Citroen is clearly trying to make the Basalt X more attractive against heavyweights like Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, and Maruti Grand Vitara.

Whether customers in India’s crowded SUV market take to Citroen’s mix of quirky design, premium touches, and tech innovation remains to be seen. But with a lower entry price and India-first features, the Basalt X definitely stands out in a segment where everyone seems to be playing safe.
