New Delhi: Mercedes-Benz has cut the sticker prices of its best-selling luxury sedan, the E-Class, in India. The decision comes just days after the government rolled out revised GST slabs for passenger vehicles, a move that has already begun reshaping car prices across the country. For luxury car buyers, it means more breathing space in the budget, especially in the premium sedan segment.
With this new cut, buyers stepping into showrooms today might feel a little less pinch, even if ₹80 lakh-plus cars are still far from “affordable.”
Mercedes India confirmed that the E-Class long-wheelbase (LWB) range has become cheaper by up to ₹5.2 lakh. The updated prices now start at ₹78.5 lakh and go up to ₹91.7 lakh, ex-showroom Delhi. Here’s the new price list:
This drop puts the E-Class in a slightly more competitive space against rivals like the BMW 5 Series and Audi A6, both of which are expected to announce similar revisions soon.
The heart of the car remains the same. The entry E200 runs a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine delivering 204 hp. The E220d, the only diesel in the lineup, also uses a 2.0-litre motor but tuned to 197 hp. Sitting at the top is the E450 AMG Line, armed with a 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbo-petrol pushing out 381 hp.
All variants feature a 48V mild-hybrid system, adding another 23 hp for smoother acceleration, and a 9-speed automatic gearbox. Mercedes’ 4Matic all-wheel-drive system, though, is limited only to the E450. For enthusiasts, the E450 remains the real performer in the pack, sprinting with ease while still carrying the comfort of a chauffeur-driven sedan.
The Union government’s decision to slash GST on certain passenger vehicles has opened the door for such adjustments. By reducing taxes, manufacturers can trim ex-showroom prices, passing on benefits to customers. This is especially significant in the luxury space, where even a small percentage change translates into lakhs saved.
For a car like the E-Class, which is as popular among CEOs for self-driving as it is among business families for chauffeur duty, the reform strengthens its position as India’s top luxury sedan.
If you were sitting on the fence, waiting for the right time, this could be it. Dealers are likely to push existing stock with added offers before the festive season. However, buyers should check variant availability as models like the E450 AMG Line may still have longer waiting periods.
The new GST-led price cuts could also boost demand in Tier-2 cities, where luxury car aspirations have been steadily rising. But as always, whether it’s ₹78 lakh or ₹91 lakh, the E-Class continues to remain a symbol of status as much as comfort.
