JLR slashes prices after GST cut: Defender down ₹18.6 lakh, Range Rover ₹30.4 lakh

Jaguar Land Rover has reduced prices of the Range Rover, Defender and Discovery SUVs by up to ₹30.40 lakh after GST 2.0 cut luxury car taxes to 40 percent. The move, effective September 9, is expected to fuel festive season demand, with rivals Mercedes, BMW, and Audi also announcing cuts.

New Delhi: Luxury car buyers in India just got a festive season gift. Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), owned by Tata Group, has reduced the ex-showroom prices of its popular SUVs by as much as ₹30.40 lakh after the new GST rate structure came into effect. The benefit is effective from September 9, giving customers an immediate reason to recheck their booking decisions.

This comes after the GST Council rolled out its revised slabs for automobiles under GST 2.0. Luxury cars, which earlier faced up to 50 percent combined tax (28 percent GST plus compensation cess of up to 22 percent), are now taxed at a flat 40 percent without any cess. The move has prompted all major luxury automakers, from Mercedes to BMW, to adjust prices.

Defender, Range Rover, Discovery get cheaper

JLR has passed on the full tax benefit across its lineup. The Range Rover series sees the biggest cut, dropping by up to ₹30.40 lakh, depending on the variant. For enthusiasts, this means the flagship Range Rover is now more accessible than ever, though still firmly in the ultra-luxury zone.

The rugged Land Rover Defender, which has developed a cult following in India for its off-road capability and design, gets a price reduction of up to ₹18.60 lakh. The Discovery, another premium SUV that often appeals to families looking for luxury with space, becomes cheaper by as much as ₹9.90 lakh.

Here’s a look at the price reductions:

  • Range Rover: ₹4.60 lakh to ₹30.40 lakh
  • Defender: ₹7 lakh to ₹18.60 lakh
  • Discovery: ₹4.50 lakh to ₹9.90 lakh

Industry ripple effect

Jaguar Land Rover is not alone. Its rivals Mercedes-Benz India, BMW, Audi and Volvo have also announced similar cuts across their line-ups. With the revised GST slab in play, luxury carmakers now expect a fresh wave of demand, especially around the upcoming festive season.

Rajan Amba, Managing Director of JLR India, called the GST rationalisation a positive move, stating it reinforces confidence in India’s luxury auto market. For a sector often seen as niche, the timing could boost sales momentum in a year where many high-end models are already attracting long waiting lists.

What it means for buyers

For customers, the GST 2.0 impact is significant. A ₹30 lakh drop can easily change the purchase decision between two competing models, or nudge a hesitant buyer towards upgrading to a higher variant. It also lowers the overall cost of ownership, from insurance to EMIs.

That said, even after these cuts, JLR models remain aspirational, sitting in the ₹1 crore-plus bracket. But in a market where luxury volumes are climbing past 50,000 units annually, a price swing of this scale will likely push more buyers into showrooms.
