Tesla have revealed Model Y’s cheapest iteration ever. But is it?

Tesla have introduced the standard version of their popular Electric SUV, the Model Y. However, there are a lots of features that it comes without including ventilated front seats and 8.0-inch touchscreen at the back.

New Delhi: Tesla have introduced a new, lower-cost variant of their best-selling SUV. The new Model Y standard is being priced at around $41,630, which is around Rs 34.7 lakh. Coming in cheaper than the previous base model, it gets a range of 516 kms, it has 58 kms less range than the previous base model and is slower as well in 0-100 kph, getting across in 6.8 seconds. 

It gets a little smaller 69.5 kWh battery that makes about 300 bhp. Essentially, it is a stripped-down version of the Tesla electric SUV. To make it cheaper, of course, there are many premium features that Tesla have been removed. It doesn’t get the panoramic glass roof, leather seats or the front light bars. They have been replaced with a metal roof, fabric upholstery and a much simpler lighting.

Buyers will also be devoid of quite a few comfort features, like the steering wheel is manually adjustable, and the ventilation has been removed from the front seats, and heated rear seats are gone as well. Tesla, though, have still kept the 15.4-inch central touchscreen at the front; however, the 8.0-inch rear touchscreen is gone as well. 

Model Y standard now gets 18-inch wheels with the 19-inch wheel available for an extra fee. Paint options are also limited to three basic colours, which are Stealth Grey, with Pearl White and Diamond available for an extra cost. Optional upgrades include a tow hitch, Full Self-Driving (Supervised) and a high-speed home charger, which can add around 71 km per hour. 

Even if all the extra options are taken, it is still seating much cheaper than the Model Y Performance. While Tesla haven’t come up with the much cheaper version that has been long-awaited, it still is quite value for money. It is something that could give the Chinese EV brands a good competition. While Tesla haven’t given an official word, the Model Y standard could come to markets like India and could attract a new segment of buyers as well.

Even the Model 3 Standard has been introduced cheaper though it holds on to more of a premium feel. The exterior is more or less similar to the higher variants, apart from the addition of a new front camera. The paint and wheel options are the same, and on the inside, it is stripped down much like the Model Y, with textile seating, manually adjustable steering column and the lack of the rear touchscreen, though it still has cabin access to the panoramic sunroof. 

Tesla have said that the single motor makes 286 bhp, just like the Premium RWD. Being a lighter car, the Standard trim goes from 0-100 kph in 5.8 seconds, slower than the Premium’s 4.9 seconds. It gets the 69.5 kWh battery pack that has a range of 527 km, and the charging is capped at 225 kW.
