New Delhi: Tata Group-owned airline Air India on Monday announced it will suspend flights between Delhi and Washington D.C. from September 1, 2025. The airline said the Boeing 787 Dreamliner planes will not be available on the select route due to the retrofit programme.
"The suspension is primarily driven by the planned shortfall in Air India's fleet, as the airline commenced retrofitting 26 of its Boeing 787-8 aircraft last month. This extensive retrofit programme, aimed at significantly enhancing customer experience, necessitates a prolonged unavailability of multiple aircraft at any given time until at least the end of 2026.
"That, coupled with the continued closure of airspace over Pakistan, impacts the airline's long-haul operations, leading to longer flight routings and increased operational complexity," the airline said in a statement.
Passengers who have booked flight tickets on Delhi-Washington DC route after 1 September 2025 will be contacted and given two options, Air India said. There will be an option to book on another flight and also get a full refund, it added.
The airline said that the suspension is due to a combination of operational factors. Air India assured to contact and offered alternative travel arrangements, including rebooking on other flights or full refunds, as per their individual preferences.
People can travel to Washington DC via JFK (New York), Newark, Chicago, or San Francisco via Air India's interline partners such as Alaska Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines.
The Tata Group-owned airline operates non-stop flights to 6 cities in North America, including Toronto and Vancouver in Canada.
