How Indian Railways is strengthening Ticket Reservation System with Robust Cyber Security

Indian Railways significantly enhanced its reservation system by deactivating 3.02 crore suspicious IDs and implementing Aadhaar-based OTP for Tatkal tickets. This boosts confirmed ticket availability for genuine passengers and strengthens the IRCTC platform's security. New Delhi: Indian Railways has taken several steps to enhance performance of the reservation system and availability of regular/tatkal tickets on IRCTC. In this article, we take a look at the steps taken to strengthen the train ticket reservation system, how crores of suspicious User IDs have been deactivated and introduction of Aadhaar-Based OTP Verification to ensure genuine passengers get confirmed train tickets via Online Tatkal Ticketing.

Union Minister for Railways, Information & Broadcasting and Electronics & Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, submitted a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha detailing how the reservation ticket booking system of Indian Railways is a robust and highly secure IT platform equipped with industry-standard, state-of-the-art cyber security controls.

The reply informed that Railways has rigorously revalidated and verified user accounts. About 3.02 crore suspicious user IDs have been deactivated since January 2025.

Anti-bot solutions such as AKAMAI have been deployed to filter non-genuine users and ensure smooth booking for legitimate passengers.

Aadhaar-Based OTP Verification: Improving Tatkal Ticket Availability

  • To ensure smooth and fair tatkal bookings, Aadhaar-based One-Time Password (OTP) verification for online tatkal ticket booking has been introduced in a phased manner. The process is already operational in 322 trains as on 4 December 2025.
  • “Due to the above steps, the confirmed tatkal ticket availability time has increased in about 65% of the abovementioned 322 trains,” the reply informed.
  • Aadhaar-based OTP for tatkal bookings at reservation counters is also under process and it is implemented in 211 trains as on December 4, 2025.
  • The above-mentioned system has helped the confirmed tatkal ticket availability time has increased in about 95% of the 96 popular trains.

Railways Robust Cybersecurity Measures 

Complaints have been filed on the National Cyber Crime Portal for suspiciously booked PNRs.

To safeguard the system from cyberattacks, multiple protective layers such as network firewalls, intrusion prevention systems, application delivery controllers and web application firewalls have been activated. Railway PSU RailTel Corporation of India Ltd provides comprehensive cyber threat intelligence services, including take-down services, threat monitoring, deep and dark web surveillance and digital risk protection.
