New Delhi: Crores of taxpayers eagerly wait for their Income Tax refund (if eligible) after submitting their Income Tax Return (ITR). Often, a large number of people wonder how many days they have to wait for the refund response from the Income Tax department.
A taxpayer should consider getting the refund once the ITR has been verified successfully through e-verification. In maximum cases, if the I-T department doesn’t find anything wrong with the ITR, the refund process takes between 7 and 21 working days. However, if any discrepancies are found, it can delay the process.
Generally, the I-T department processes the refund and credits it to the bank account of the taxpayers within 4 to 5 weeks of the e-filing and e-verification of ITR.
The refund timeline begins after a taxpayer e-verifies the ITR through Aadhaar OTP, Internet Banking or other online processes. The offline process takes longer to get a refund.
This year, the central government has extended the deadline to file Income Tax Return for 2024-25 (AY 25-26) to September 15, 2025. Every year, the deadline is fixed for July 31, 2025. The extension came as a big relief for salaried individuals, NRIs and pensioners.
The Ministry of Finance has released a notice stating that after considering the extensive changes introduced in the notified Income Tax Returns (ITRs) and considering the time required for system readiness and rollout of ITR utilities for Assessment Year (AY) 2025-26, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has decided to extend the due date for filing returns.
“Accordingly, to facilitate a smooth and convenient filing experience for taxpayers, it has been decided that the due date for filing of ITRs, originally due on 31st July, 2025, is extended to 15th September, 2025. A formal notification to this effect is being issued separately, the official release mentioned.
