New Delhi: Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW), Varanasi, is globalising the brand "Make in India." The "Make in India and Make for the World" vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is gaining traction as Indian Railways' manufacturing unit, Banaras Locomotive Works, has delivered six (6) "diesel electric locomotives" to the state-owned railways company, CFM, of Mozambique. The locomotives, having 3300 horsepower (HP) each, are running on the tracks of Mozambique, making the appeal of Brand India global. This project is of strategic importance as it positions India as a global locomotive manufacturing hub and aligns with the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” vision of PM Modi.

For the time period between 2021 and 2023, BLW has delivered six engine locomotives to Mozambique. The engines are designed to ply on the Cape Gauge track. Cape gauge refers to a railway track gauge of 1,067 mm (3 ft 6 inches).

Additionally, Indian Railways has secured a contract for making 10 such train engines. By June 2025, it had already delivered the two locomotives, and the remaining 8 are set to be delivered by December 2025. The train engine contract is for 3300 horsepower (HP) each. These engines are designed in such a manner that they could reach a speed as high as 100 km/h. The product quality is kept to international standards, keeping in mind durability and technical advancement.

The interior of train engine cars is equipped with facilities such as installed executive chairs and air coolers, hot plates, and mobile phone stands. All of this is provided keeping in mind the difficulties the loco pilots face during the journey.

The latest contract order by Mozambique is set to be a keystone in globalising Brand India, as it not just establishes the brand but also makes it global. This contract comes in the backdrop of a recent order by the West African country "Guinea," in which Indian Railways' Marhowra Rail Factory is set to export 150 locomotive engines worth Rs 3000 crore.
