IRCTC's New Aadhaar Rule for Train Ticket Booking: Know timings and how to link account

IRCTC has updated train ticket booking rules. From October 28, 2025, Aadhaar verification is mandatory for booking tickets between 8-10 AM, impacting high-demand trains. Tatkal booking also requires Aadhaar-linked accounts. Passengers must link their Aadhaar to their IRCTC profile via the website or app before booking to avoid inconvenience during priority slots.

New Delhi: IRCTC has made a big change in the rules of booking train tickets. During 8 am and 10 am, no person will be able to book tickets without an Aadhaar card. This new rule will have a direct impact on those passengers who try to withdraw their tickets without Aadhaar verification. As before, booking tickets will not be possible with the help of mobile numbers or other documents. Passengers will now be required to update their Aadhaar number before booking their tickets. However, tickets can be booked after 10 pm without Aadhaar verification.

According to the IRCTC website, only Aadhaar verified users will be able to book tickets from 8 AM to 10 AM after booking reserved tickets from 28th October 2025. In this two-hour time, tickets for high demand trains are released first. Therefore, there is a high probability of fraud and error.

After this time, users without Aadhaar verified can also book tickets in a normal manner, but the first day's slot of 8 am to 10 am will be only for Aadhaar verified accounts. Earlier, IRCTC had stated that only Aadhaar verified users can book Tatkal train tickets.

How to Link Aadhaar to Your IRCTC Account

Travellers who have not yet verified Aadhaar in their IRCTC account can do so immediately. You can link the Aadhaar number in the My Profile section by logging in to the IRCTC website or mobile app.

Step 1: Open www.irctc.co.in in the browser

Step 2: Sign in by entering login credentials

Step 3: Go to MY Account tab and select Authenticate User

Step 4: Enter Aadhaar number or virtual ID on the authentication page.

Step 5: Check the name shown on the screen, date of birth and gender. The credentials must match with the Aadhaar card. If it does not match, then correct it with the edit option.

Step 6: Click on the Verify Details and Receive OTP button. OTP will be received on mobile linked with Aadhaar.

Step 7: Enter OTP. Read the consent box and agree.

Step 8: Click the Submit button. After this, Aadhaar will be verified.

Aadhaar verification mandatory for booking Tatkal tickets

Indian Railways had earlier said that from 1 July 2025, only Aadhaar verified users will be able to book Tatkal tickets on the IRCTC website and app. Indian Railways had also said that Aadhaar-based OTP verification will become mandatory for online Tatkal ticket booking from 15 July 2025.
