National Telecom Policy 2025: 10 lakh jobs, Rs 1 Lakh crore investment and more

The National Telecom Policy intends to generate 10 lakh new jobs while simultaneously inviting investments worth Rs 1 lakh crore in the sector by 2030. New Delhi: The National Telecom Policy intends to generate 10 lakh new jobs while simultaneously inviting investments worth Rs 1 lakh crore in the sector by 2030, as per the document released by the Department of Telecom.

The draft policy strives to place India among the top 10 global spots for innovation and research in emerging technologies such as 5G, 6G, AI, the Internet of Things (IoT), and quantum communications.

"The NTP-25 aims to accomplish the following strategic objectives in the telecom sector by 2030: universal and meaningful connectivity for all, doubling the contribution of the sector to India’s GDP, and achieving an annual investment of Rs 1,00,000 crore," the draft policy document issued on July 24 said.

The Department of Telecom is open for public comments for 21 days on the said policy from the date of the issuance of the circular.

The NTP-25 policy is set to make India a leading consumer of digital technologies. Additionally, it strives to place India as a trusted global telecom service provider and top-class provider of telecom products and its related services and solutions.

"The National Telecom Policy 2025 (NTP-25) would position India to become the manufacturer of choice of telecom products for the world. It outlines a comprehensive roadmap for investment in research, upskilling of the workforce, infrastructure modernisation, and effective spectrum management to support in a sustainable manner emerging use cases across smart cities, industry 4.0, rural broadband, emergency response, and digital governance," the draft said.

The policy envisions doubling the telecom products and services export, the number of telecommunication startups, and the sectoral R&D (research and development) spending related to emerging telecom technologies.

The policy has set a target to attain a 10 percent share in 6G-related intellectual property rights by 2030 while simultaneously creating the non-profit company to foster innovation in the sector.

As per NTP-25, the government is set to explore the establishment of a sovereign patent fund. The would-be fund is established to obtain the objective of creating a pool of Standard Essential Patent (SEP). The pool would be used for supporting the development of standard essential patents in emerging tech.
