Railways harnessing AI for integrated security centre and analytics platform

The initiative is born out of the need to protect the national transporter that carries close to 90% of the global population in a year from attacks by cyber criminals and utilise big data to make decision making for efficient.

Kolkata: Railways is no longer just locomotives and tracks and clanking of metal. Indian Railways has started harnessing artificial intelligence (AI) to secure its digital infrastructure and efficient management of information and operations systems, said reports. Centre for Railway Information Systems, popularly referred to as CRIS has taken up these goals, it said in a report released on the occasion of the 40th foundation day.

“The implementation of IRSOC will significantly enhance the cybersecurity monitoring capabilities of Indian Railways, leading to a substantial reduction in Mean Time to Detect and Mean Time to Respond through the deployment of advanced security solutions such as Security Information and Event Management (SIEM), Security Orchestration Automation and Response (SOAR), Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR), and Network Detection and Response (NDR),” the report mentioned.

The harnessing of artificial intelligence and machine learning is expected to improve decision making in every facet of operation -- passenger movement, freight handling, inventory management, asset management and tracking financial performance. Indian Railways needs to grow income from freight handling and passenger fares as well as raising profitability. Enhancing passenger safety is another top concern.

Furthermore, Indian Railways Security Operations Centre, or IRSOC will be designed as a centralised system with the express intent of boosting the railways defences against cyber attacks.

Railways has also decided to take help from Vinod Dham, an Indian-American engineer, entrepreneur, and venture capitalist, often referred to as the 'Father of the Pentium Chip'. Dham is expected to advise on how the organisation can deploy technology such as blockchain. It can do so for management of contracts and freight movement to implement tamper-proof cargo tracking. He also Reports said Dham has advised that railways should adopt data-driven, dynamic passenger and freight pricing structures in the model of what the airlines do.

“Indian Railways has initiated the deployment of AI/ML applications across various functional domains, resulting in siloed implementation of multiple high-value use cases. To overcome these silos and drive cohesive digital transformation, CRIS has initiated the process of building an enterprise-wide AI/ML-powered decision support system,” the report said.
