Against this background of galloping adoption, NCPI has issued several tips for safe digital payments. Let's have a close look.

Check before you pay: "Always check before you pay," said NCPI. The first rule that can actually preempt many regrets and corrective action is that one should check the name that appears on the screen before making any payment. The point to ensure is that the intended recipient is the name that appears on the screen. Spend a few seconds to avoid mistakes, no matter whatever your haste, NCPI has cautioned.

Trusted payment Apps/websites only: One should only engage in transactions with trusted payment Apps and websites, NCPI has emphasised. If you get any Apps or links from people who are not trusted or strangers, simply do not click.

No sharing of OTP and PIN: UPI PIN, OTP and/or bank details are confidential and meant only for the use of the user. Not even in moments of callousness should one share these with anyone. Digital fraudsters often call posing to be officers of the police, customs, income tax department, DRI, ED, CBI etc. You should not entertain any such call when they ask for such information related to your finances.

Avoid haste while paying: Fraudsters also often ask individuals to quickly make a payment or to share details about you. "You can always say you will check and call back. It is okay to take your time," NCPI has stated.

Keep payment alerts: "Turn on SMS and App notifications for your payments. Read each alert carefully. If something looks wrong, contact your bank or payment App immediately," NCPI has stated.

The steps described above are very easy and basically urge caution. They don't involve hard work or any lengthy, time-consuming process. Therefore, all should follow these rules. NCPI has also said that one should report suspicious numbers to the national cybercrime helpline by dialling 1930 or the Department of Telecommunication (https://sancharsaathi.gov.in/sfc/). One should also save messages and take screenshots for complaints and documentation.
