Wholesale Price Inflation turns negative at -0.13% in June 2025

Wholesale Price Index (WPI)-based inflation plummeted to negative at -0.13% in June 2025. This contrasts sharply with May's 0.39% WPI data and June 2024's 3.43%. The decline is largely attributed to deflation in food articles (-3.75%), fuel and power (-2.65%), and manufactured products (1.97%).

New Delhi: Wholesale Price Inflation (WPI) data was recorded as negative at -0.13% per cent for the month of June as the prices of food and fuel decreased, along with easing in the overall cost of manufactured products, the data released by the government on Monday, 14th July, 2025 stated. It was around 3.43 percent in the corresponding June month of the last fiscal year. For the month of May, WPI inflation data was 0.39 percent.

"Negative rate of inflation in June 2025 is primarily due to a decrease in prices of food articles, mineral oils, the manufacture of basic metals, crude petroleum & natural gas, etc.," said the Ministry of Commerce and Industry in a statement.

On the food inflation front, food commodity prices witnessed a downfall of 3.75 percent in June as against a downfall that was recorded at 1.56 percent for the month of May 2025, as per the data released by the Office of the Economic Adviser under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

Vegetables have specifically observed a sharp fall, going down by 22.65 percent in June 2025 as compared to the 21.62 percent downfall that was observed in the month of May 2025.

In the case of manufactured products, inflation was at 1.97 percent, compared to 2.04 percent in May.

The fuel and power component observed a deflation of 2.65 percent (2.65%) as compared to the deflation script of 2.27 percent observed for the month of May 2025.

RBI generally considers retail inflation data for the formulation of monetary policy. The retail inflation data is scheduled to be released today, 14th July 2025.

In June 2025, the RBI cut the repo rate by 50 basis points, taking the policy rate to 5.50 percent.
