Kolkata: The deadline for filing ITR (income Tax Return) has to be extended beyond September 15, 2025, multiple professional associations have urged the government, pointing out to persistent technical glitches in the e-filing portal impeding the process. Among the bodies that have requested extension of the deadline are Advocates Tax Bar Association (ATBA), Karnataka State Chartered Accountants Association (KSCAA) and the central council of Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI).

Advocates Tax Bar Association have asked for one month extensions seeking the deadline to be set at October 15. Significantly, this year the government had extended the normal deadline of July 31 to September 15 to submit the returns in view of the delay in the updated ITR forms and utilities and tardy operational preparedness.

47 lakh ITRs a day

On the other hand, the Income Tax Department has been exhorting the people in social media posts that they should not delay in filing returns and never wait for the last day to file it. According to reports, till September 9, about 5.14 crore ITRs have been filed and about 2.86 crore returns were still to be filed in less than a week. It worked out to more than 47 lakh ITRs a day till September 15, 2025.

Delay in ITR utilities

The Advocates Tax Bar Association (ATBA) has written to the Union finance minister and said that in view of the delay in the updated ITR utilities being available, technical glitches on the portal and floods in different parts of the country, this deadline should be extended. Its national general secretary Om Kumar has also pointed to the compliance needs during the festive season as a reason for pushing back the deadline.

The ministry or CBDT has not yet indicated whether it would consider the pleas. Till it does, the deadline will be September 15. ATBA has said that the deadline for submission of tax audits should be November 30, 2025. While the ITR filing deadline of September 15 applies to those whose accounts don't need to be audited, those whose accounts need to be audited have to file ITRs by October 31, 2025.

"Undermines ease of doing business"

Reports stated that Karnataka State Chartered Accountants Association (KSCAA) has also pointed to a few hurdles to filing ITR this year. These are delays in the release of ITR forms and audit forms, technical issues in the portal, overlapping compliance burden and financial burden on taxpayers. KSCAA has also demanded that the stability of the portal should be maintained and issues of AIS mismatches should be addressed quickly. Also downtimes should be prevented and the capacity of the system should be augmented. They has also argued that the inefficiencies are detrimental to the Taxpayer’s Charter and even contradict the government’s avowed objective of promoting ease of doing business.
