Russia emerges as major job hub; 1 million Indians likely to be recruited

Russia plans to hire 1 million Indian professionals across sectors like construction, textiles, and manufacturing, addressing its labour shortage. A significant labour-mobility agreement is expected during President Putin's upcoming visit to India, expanding overseas job opportunities for skilled Indians.

New Delhi: Big news for Indian professionals who are aspiring to work abroad. Amid a growing labour shortage due to demographic decline and the ongoing war with Ukraine, Russia to emerge as a major job destination for Indian professionals. In a significant development, Russia is putting its best foot forward to hire nearly 10 lakh skilled Indians across various categories.

India and Russia is likely to move towards finalising a labour-mobility agreement. This is going to be one of the key pacts during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s upcoming visit to India. This will not just mark a new phase in bilateral cooperation but also expand overseas employment opportunities for Indians. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) will also be signed at their annual summit in Delhi in December 2025.

According to the reports, Indians will be recruited heavily in Russia in sectors such as construction and textiles. A huge workforce is required in sectors such as machinery and electronics. One can also aim in the manufacturing, engineering and technology sectors in Russia.

Currently, around 40 Indians are serving in the Russian Army. The Indian community in the Russian Federation numbers approximately 14,000. Additionally, approximately 1,500 Afghan citizens of Indian origin live in Russia. The Indian Embassy reported that ​​approximately 500 Indian businessmen live in Russia, of whom more than 200 work in Moscow.

According to the reports, 4,500 Indian students are enrolled in medical and technical institutions in Russia. Around 90 per cent of these students are pursuing medical studies. While the rest are pursuing engineering, aeronautical design, computer science, transport technology, management, agriculture, and business/financial management.
