New Delhi: Popular Bengaluru biryani chain Meghana Foods has issued a public apology after a notice at one of its outlets triggered widespread criticism online. The poster, written in all caps and circulated widely on social media, read: “Swiggy & Zomato delivery boys not allowed in the lift. Please use the stairs.” Many users called the instruction insensitive, arguing that delivery workers already operate under intense time pressure and harsh conditions.
Meghana Foods, a well-known biryani chain in Bengaluru, recently faced severe backlash after it reportedly showed discriminatory behavior towards delivery workers. Following widespread online criticism, the biryani chain has issued a public apology.
In one of the outlets of Meghana Foods, there was a notice in all caps that read, "Swiggy & Zomato delivery boys not allowed in the lift. Please use the stairs." It became viral on social media, with netizens bashing Meghana Foods for being insensitive when delivery workers are already working under immense pressure.
Meghana Foods released a statement on Instagram in which it said that "although the intention was to reduce elevator congestion for customers, the message was inconsiderate and failed to acknowledge the dignity and hard work of our delivery partners. This was wrong, and it should never have been displayed."
It added, "Delivery partners are an essential part of our ecosystem. They work tirelessly and deserve respect, care, and appreciation at all times. We take full responsibility. The poster has been removed immediately, and the matter has been addressed internally to ensure such incidents do not happen again."
It offered "sincere apologies to all delivery partners," calling them "integral to Meghana Foods." The statement ended with "we are committed to improving your experience with us. We hope you will forgive this lapse as we work towards doing better every day."
The apology has not convinced many people who have questioned if Meghana Foods would truly bring about the change, and asked if the rules for delivery personnel have been changed. Many people suggested that the apology was issued only because the notice became viral on social media platforms. However, in the comment section of the statement, Meghana Foods responded that it would change the rule.
