Bengaluru: In recent times residents of Bengaluru’s Vidyaranyapura locality and lake activists have been protesting the proposal to construct a building on the buffer zone of Narasipura Lake. They have expressed their concern after coming across the levelling of land near the lake.

Residents halted the project

Even as residents were successful in halting the project for the time being, they remain worried about bufferzone of the lake. As per them, a sewage plant was constructed in the area, but was defunct nearly two decades ago. They continued to protest any kind of construction in the area.

Angered by the development, residents of the area want authorities to protect the land. He also blamed the authorities for trying to construct the building without repairing the defunct sewage plant or constructing a new one.

‘Land became destination to dump garbage’

"I want the authorities concerned not to allow construction of any structure in the buffer zone. All these years, the land became a destination to dump all types of garbage and debris. Around 500 people visit Narasipura Lake every day for a walk. We planted saplings on the lake bund more than a decade ago. As of now, the construction of the building is stopped. I do not know what will happen in the future,” Gopalakrishna H, a resident, said, while speaking to Bangalore Mirror.

Residents urge authorities to stop sewage from entering the lake

Another added, "I want the authorities to take measures to stop sewage from entering the lake and ensure no construction of structures on the buffer zone. We have enquired with the BWSSB engineers about the proposal to construct a building, but they feigned ignorance.” The residents of the area have registered their complaint to Bengaluru North City Corporation Commissioner about the construction.
