New Delhi: Days after a powerful blast rocked Delhi and left nine people dead and several others injured, a new CCTV footage has surfaced showing the exact moment a white Hyundai i20 car blew up in the middle of a jam-packed road near Red Fort. The explosion took place on Monday evening, sending shockwave across the Old Delhi area and damaging nearby vehicles and buildings.
The footage which was captured on a CCTV installed near Red Fort Metro Station's Gate Number 1. The clip shows an i20 car surrounded by several autos, e-rickshaws and other vehicles, moving in a slow pace before exploding on a busy road amid heavy traffic.
Centre terms Red Fort blast 'terror incident'
The Centre on Wednesday termed the car explosion as "heinous terror incident" and directed investigating agencies to deal with the case with "utmost urgency and professionalism" to bring those behind it and their sponsors to justice without delay.
The Union Cabinet at its meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, passed a resolution, reaffirming India's commitment to a policy of zero tolerance towards terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. The Home Ministry has handed over the probe into the incident to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
Suspected suicide bomber Umar Nabi driving the car
According to investigation, the car was believed to be driven by Dr Umar Nabi, a 32-year-old doctor and suspected member of a terror module linked with Pakistan-based terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM). Nabi allegedly bought the car on October 29 from Faridabad and left it Al-Falah Medical College for few days.
On the fateful day of November 10, the car entered the Sunehri Masjid parking lot in Chandni Chowk at 3:19 pm. It remained there for more than three 3 hours and left the parking lot around 6:30 pm, without the driver stepping out, according to a footage. A man, believed to be Nabi, was seen driving the car with his hand resting on the window frame.
Shortly after exiting the parking lot, the car moved towards Netaji Subhash Marg near Red Fort and detonated amid slow-moving evening traffic.
