Mumbai: Veteran icon Dharmendra bid farewell to the world on Monday afternoon at his Juhu residence. He was 89 years old and was battling illness for a prolonged period. The news of the actor's demise left his fans and peers in pain. His peers took to social media to pay tributes to him. They cherished the actor, nicknamed the 'He-Man' of Bollywood.
Why was Dharmendra called the 'He-Man' of Bollywood?
Dharmendra made his debut in acting in 1960 in Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere. Though he started as a romantic hero, Dharmendra went on to show his audience how well he could handle roles that required action. In 1966, the actor starred in Phool Aur Patthar, and that was the turning point in his life. In the movie, the actor appeared shirtless, flaunting his toned body with confidence. At the time, Dharmendra's physical appearance cemented his image as an action hero. Following the success of the movie, the industry nicknamed him the 'He-Man' of Bollywood.
Dharmendra was cremated at the Pawan Hans crematorium. Several actors and close family members were seen arriving at the spot. However, the family has issued an official statement relating to the actor's death.

He was an iconic film personality, a phenomenal actor who brought charm and depth to every role he played. The manner in which he played diverse roles struck a chord with countless people. Dharmendra Ji was equally admired for his simplicity, humility and warmth. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with his family, friends and innumerable fans. Om Shanti," said PM Narendra Modi. Karan Johar referred to the death of Dharmendra as the end of an era.
