New Delhi: Kingdom, starring Vijay Deverakonda, is an engaging spy thriller film that follows Soori, a police officer from a village in Telangana who has spent 18 years searching for his long lost brother, Shiva (played by Satyadev). The Gowtham Tinnauri’s directorial is an emotional drama intertwined with action sequences with a gritty narrative.

The director’s narrative style and emotionally grounded approach set Kingdom apart from his previous directorials, such as Jersey and Malli Raava. Apart from the stellar performances and storyline, Anirudh Ravichander’s music is the soul of the film.

Kingdom review: Plot

Kingdom revolves around Surya, who receives information about his brother Shiva’s whereabouts. However, he has been given one condition that he must carry an undercover mission to Sri Lanka to infiltrate a mafia syndicate. With the help of local spy (played by Bhagyashree Borse), Soori, begins ‘Mission Sri Lanka’. What happens next is the crux of the film. The narrative is filled with action, emotion and unexpected revelations, keeping audiences on the edge of their seat.

From the opening scene, his storytelling and world-building is quite evident. While gangster themes are not new in Telugu cinema, Tinnauri’s fresh approach set Kingdom apart.

The first half of the movie is engaging with characters introductions, pacing and setup leading to gripping interval point. The Sri Lankan setting adds a unique flavour, transporting the audience into an intense underworld drama. Interestingly, the director utilises Vijay Deverakonda and Satyadev’s acting prowess to elevate the emotional depth in the storyline.

Though the second half slows down slightly in pace but picks up steam during the final 20 minutes. The climax takes the cake and sets stage for the sequel of the film.

Vijay Deverakonda delivers a compelling performance, especially in the emotional segments. Satyadev adds vulnerability to the narrative and gives a powerful performance. Bhagyashree Borse impresses with her performance and Venkatesh, who is seen in a key supporting role, shine with his impactful presence.

Anirudh Ravichander’s background score is the heartbeat of the film and his music elevates drama, action, and emotional moments, adding a new dimension to the viewing experience. Girish Gangadhar’s cinematography captures Sri Lanka in a visually arresting manner, unlike anything seen before in the Telugu cinema.

Kingdom review: Verdict

Overall, Kingdom is a stylish, emotional and engaging movie and a must-watch for all cinema lovers. With strong performances, stellar music, and a gripping plot, Vijay Deverakonda’s latest release reigns.
