New Delhi: Six people were killed on Sunday after an Innova car carrying pilgrims plunged into a deep gorge near Ganesh Point in Nashik’s Wani area. The victims were returning from a pilgrimage to the revered Saptashrungi Devi Temple when the accident occurred on the steep, winding stretch of the hill road.
According to officials, the group had completed their temple visit and was travelling back through the narrow mountain routes of Wani when the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle. The area is known for sharp bends and dangerous curves bordering deep gorges. The car is believed to have veered off the road while navigating one such curve, leading to the fatal fall that killed all six occupants on the spot.
Rescue teams, police personnel and local authorities rushed to the crash site after receiving information. Efforts were made to retrieve the bodies and assess the conditions that led to the tragedy. A detailed investigation has been initiated to determine whether speeding, slippery surfaces or mechanical issues contributed to the driver losing control. The accident has left the local community and temple devotees deeply shaken.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the deaths, saying, “Deeply saddened by the loss of lives due to a mishap in Nashik, Maharashtra. My thoughts are with those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that the injured recover soon.” Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also condoled the loss of lives and said officials are probing the circumstances behind the crash.
In another tragic incident in Maharashtra the same day, two tourists from Goa were killed in a collision between a car and a mini truck near Lion’s Point in Lonavala hill station. The victims, identified as Yogesh Sutar and Mayur, were part of a 14-member group visiting Lonavala for a picnic. Their car reportedly collided head-on with a mini truck, leaving the vehicle mangled.
Locals alerted authorities after spotting the wreckage, and emergency teams arrived swiftly. The injured truck driver is undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital. Police said postmortem examinations have been completed and the bodies will soon be handed over to the families. An investigation is underway to identify the exact cause of the collision.
