Census 2027: Centre issues notification, houselisting phase to begin on April 1

The Census 2027 will cover the entire population of the country. It will provide data on amenities, housing, education, demography, and economic activity. It will also be India's first fully digital census.

New Delhi: The Centre issued a notification for the houselisting phase of the Census. The census will be conducted in two phases and will start from April 1 this year and will continue till September 30.

To be carried out by state or UT Governments, the self-enumeration will be done for 15 days, before house-to-house visits, which will be done for 30 days. While it will be the first phase of the census, the same will record details relating to houses and basic amenities.

Population Enumeration will be conducted in the second phase

After this, the Population Enumeration (PE) will be held in the second phase in February next year. However. In some parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh, the PE will be held this year only due to climatic reasons. In this phase, authorities will collect details related to demography, culture, socio-economic , and other details.

The Centre has approved Rs f Rs 11,718 crore for the exercise. The last census was carried out in 2011. While the census was to be carried out in 2021, the same had to be postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the country and the rest of the world. The next census will be held in 2027. It will be the 16th census in India and the eighth after independence.

The data will be collected through mobile apps and monitored through the Census Management & Monitoring System (CMMS) website. Earlier, the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs gave its green signal for caste enumeration in the Census 2027.
