New Delhi: In what should be seen as a major development, at least half a dozen executives from top arms manufacturing companies from India, including Adani Defence and Bharat Forge, attended rare meetings in Russia in 2025, according to a report by news agency Reuters. The aim of the meeting has been seemingly to discuss probable joint ventures.
They reportedly began when India's defence business leaders first visited Russia after its Ukraine war started. The Centre is looking to re-establish its defence ties with Russia. Notably, the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is pushing to make India a global manufacturing hub of weapons as part of the 'Make in India' initiative. On October 29-30, an Indian defence-industrial delegation led by India's Defence Production Secretary Sanjeev Kumar visited Moscow and talks took place at that time.
The goal of the meetings was reportedly to manufacture spares for Mikoyan MiG-29 fighter jet, and other air defence and weapon systems of Russia. Also, Russia reportedly proposed to set up production units in India to make equipment which could be exported to Moscow as well. Notably, during Putin's recent visit to India, he and PM Modi agreed to reorient their partnership "to joint research and development, co-development and co-production of advanced defence technology and systems."
Several people from Indian defence firms and also startups that develop drones and artificial intelligence for the military, as per the report. People from Kalyani Group's Bharat Forge attended the meetings, reportedly to secure components for Russian-origin tanks and aircraft and to join hands in future. Adani Defence and Aerospace was represented at the meetings, and an executive from the Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers advisory group also attended the meetings.
