Mamata Banerjees govt opposing SIR to help infiltrators: PM Modi in virtual address at Bengal rally

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday launched a blistering attack at the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government in West Bengal and alleged that the Mamata Banerjee's party was opposing the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls to help infiltrators. He also appealed to the people of the state to give the BJP a chance in the 2026 Assembly elections, asserting that it will bring development in the state.
PM Modi's virtual address
PM Modi made the remarks while addressing a rally virtually in West Bengal's Nadia as he failed to reach the Taherpur rally site due to dense fog. He was supposed to reach the rally venue this afternoon but bad weather and low visibility forced his chopper to return to Kolkata airport after hovering over the Taherpur helipad for some time.
He apologised to those who reached the rally venue in Taherpur for not being able to address them in person, saying that bad weather prevented him from reaching the venue.
PM Modi's sharp attack at Mamata govt
At the rally, PM Modi alleged that infiltrators enjoy TMC's patronage in West Bengal under Mamata Banerjee's government and accused the TMC of shielding them.
"Amid the BJP’s honest efforts, you must remain alert to the conspiracies of the Trinamool Congress. The TMC is exerting all its influence to shield infiltrators. Whenever leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party speak out against infiltration, it is the TMC leadership that appears unsettled and defensive," he said.
The Prime Minister also accused the TMC government of stalling the development work in the state. "I want to say with all sincerity that if the TMC wants to oppose Modi, it is free to do so, but I fail to understand why the development of West Bengal is being held back," he said.
Mounting his attack at the ruling TMC government, PM Modi said, "There is neither a shortage of funds, nor of intent, nor of plans for the development of West Bengal. But here there is a government that remains busy with commissions. Even today, development projects worth thousands of crores of rupees are stalled in West Bengal."
'Give BJP a chance to form double-engine govt'
PM Modi said that the BJP will make all efforts to bring development in West Bengal. "Our government is making continuous efforts to ensure that even those parts of West Bengal which were deprived for a long time receive modern connectivity. Give BJP a chance to form double-engine government in the state," he said. West Bengal is set to go to the polls next year.
"The construction of a four-lane road from Barajaguli to Krishnanagar will greatly benefit the people of North 24 Parganas, Nadia, Krishnanagar, and surrounding regions. Today, work has also begun on the four-lane road from Barasat to Barajaguli. Both these projects will boost economic activity and promote tourism across the entire region," he added.
Prime Minister Modi also said that the BJP's recent win in the recently held Bihar Assembly polls has paved the path for the party's victory in West Bengal.
"Today, the nation wants rapid development. You have seen that just last month, Bihar delivered a resounding victory to the NDA in the name of development. After that, I said that the Ganga flows from Bihar and reaches Bengal as well. That is why Bihar has paved the path for victory in Bengal," he added.
