New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday thanked voters in Maharashtra as the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance moved towards a sweeping victory in the state’s civic body elections, saying the results reflected public support for the NDA’s focus on welfare and good governance.

In a post on X, the prime minister said the outcome of the civic polls "show that the bond between the NDA and the people of Maharashtra has become even stronger”.

'Celebration of glorious culture'

"I express heartfelt gratitude to all the people of Maharashtra. This mandate will give greater momentum to progress and is a celebration of the glorious culture connected with the state,” he wrote.

The PM also praised party workers for their efforts during the campaign, saying he was proud of every NDA worker across Maharashtra for work tirelessly day and night.

"While sharing information about the performance of our alliance, they also clearly underlined our vision for the times ahead and effectively countered the false allegations of the opposition. My heartfelt best wishes to them,” he added.

The prime minister’s message came as the Bharatiya Janata Party emerged as the single largest party in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections, winning 84 seats. The Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), led by Uddhav Thackeray, followed closely with 72 seats.

Historic shift in Mumbai

As per the latest trends, the BJP–Shiv Sena alliance is leading or has secured victories in 24 of the 29 municipal corporations that went to polls across Maharashtra. In Mumbai, the alliance is currently ahead with 112 seats, comfortably surpassing its rivals — the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, and the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) combine.

If these trends hold, Mumbai is set to see its first mayor not aligned with the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena, marking a significant political shift in the city’s civic landscape.

The strong performance of the BJP–Sena alliance in both Maharashtra and Mumbai triggered celebrations among senior leaders of the ruling coalition. Even before Prime Minister Narendra Modi reacted, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari congratulated the alliance on its showing.

Fadnavis thanks voters

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis visited the BJP headquarters in Mumbai and addressed party workers, thanking voters for placing their faith in the NDA alliance’s development agenda and Hindutva pitch. He said the mandate reflected public endorsement of the government’s vision for governance and urban development in the state.
