Protests, clashes outside Bangladesh High Commission in Delhi over lynching of Hindu man
There are reports of minor clashes between police and protesters outside the Bangladesh High Commission as police tried to push the protesters away. The security has been beefed up outside the mission.
New Delhi: Massive protests were carried by various right-wing organisations including Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) outside Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi over the killing of Hindu man and attacks on Hindu minorities. The security has been beefed up outside the Bangladesh High Commission following the protests.
There are reports of minor clashes between police and protesters outside the mission as police try to push the protesters away.
Bangladesh has seen multiple incidents of attacks on Hindus following the ouster of Bangladesh P Sheikh Hasina. Earlier, Indian government suspended visa services in many Bangladesh cities.
Lynching of Dipu Chandra Das
A 27-year-old Hindu man named Dipu Chandra Das, a garment factory worker, was lynched by a mob over allegations of blasphemy in the capital Bangladesh.
Das was allegedly lynched by a group of over 100 people at Mymensingh on December 18 night and his body was set ablaze and hanged on a highway.
Ahead of the planned demonstrations, the security was tightened in the area with three layers of barricading and deployment of more force from the police and paramilitary, to prevent any untoward incident.
Hindu groups warn march towards Bangladesh
The Vishwa Hindu Parishad’s (VHP), Delhi unit, office bearer Surendra Gupta and dozens of sadhus have demanded an apology from the current Yunus government in Bangladesh. The protesters have also sought intervention from the Indian government in the issue.
Hindu organisations also raised slogans outside the Bangladesh government and recited the Hanuman Chalisa. Amid the continuing breakdown of law and order in Bangladesh and alleged targeted violence against minorities, hundreds of youths and members of Hindu organisations staged a protest near the Bangladesh High Commission in Delhi on Tuesday.
Protesters broke through barricades
During the protest, demonstrators broke through three layers of barricades and tried to enter the mission. Police used mild force t stop the protesters. Buses have been deployed to detain protesters.
Leading the protest, Vishwa Hindu Parishad’s leader Surendra Gupta told TV9 Network that Hindus are being targeted in Bangladesh and that the dignity of women is being violated. He demanded that the Yunus government apologise and stop the violence.
He also urged the Indian government to intervene in view of the prevailing situation, and warned that if the government failed to take steps, sadhus, saints and Hindu organisations will march towards Bangladesh.
