New Delhi: Amid the ongoing IndiGo crisis, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that rules and regulations framed by the government should be used to improve the system, not to harass the public. The Prime Minister made the remarks at the key meeting of the lawmakers from the ruling BJP-led National Democratic Alliance, on Tuesday.
"Prime Minister Modi said rules and regulations should be used to improve the system, not harass the public," said Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, sharing excerpts of the PM Modi's comments on the IndiGo crisis.
"It is our responsibility to ensure that no citizen of India faces any kind of trouble from the government simply because they are Indian citizens," Rijiju quoted PM Modi as saying.
IndiGo crisis
IndiGo, India's largest airline, has been grappling with an organisational crisis and pilot crunch that have forced it to cancel over 1,000 flights over the last week. The airline attributed the disruptions to new pilot duty norms, technical glitches, and adverse weather, among others. The ongoing crisis has caused huge inconvenience to thousands of passengers, some of whom had to cancel or postpone their weddings, professional commitments and holiday plans.
Govt's stern warning
Civil Aviation Minister K Ram Mohan Naidu told the Rajya Sabha yesterday that IndiGo's "internal crisis" was to blame for the cancellation of flights over the past week. He also warned of strict action against the airline, saying the government "will set an example for every airline".
"We care for pilots, crew and passengers. We made it clear to all the airlines. IndiGo was supposed to manage the crew and roster. Passengers faced a lot of difficulties. We are not taking the situation lightly. We will take strict action. We will set an example for every airline. If there is any non-compliance, we will take action," he told Parliament on Monday.
