Unnao Rape Case: Delhi HC suspends life sentence of Kuldeep Sengar, grants bail

As soon as the case came to light, Senger was expelled from the BJP. He was also sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape of a 17-year-old girl in the 2017 Unnao case on December 20, 2019. He was charged under IPC Section 376 and the POCSO Act.

New Delhi: In a significant development in the Unnao rape case, the Delhi High Court on Tuesday suspended the life imprisonment sentence of the convict and former BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar. The bench, Justice Subramonium Prasad and Justice Harish Vaidyanathan Shankar, suspended the sentence of Senger and laid down strict conditions.

During the hearing, the court ordered the former Unnao MLA o furnish a personal bond of Rs 15 lakh . While the accused has been asked to stay in Delhi, Senger has also been asked not to reach near five kilometre radius of the victim’s residence.

The court also ordered Senger to deposit his passport and report weekly at the local police station. He has also been asked to refrain from threatening the survivor or her family. It may, however, be noted that survival do not mean acquittal and the case would be continued.

Senger was expelled from the BJP in 2017

As soon as the case came to light, Senger was expelled from the BJP. He was also sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape of a 17-year-old girl in the 2017 Unnao case on December 20, 2019. He was charged under IPC Section 376 and the POCSO Act.

Within months, in March 2020, Senger was awarded 10 years’ jail for culpable homicide and criminal conspiracy in the death of the victim’s father whodied in custody. He was asked to pay a fine of Rs 35 lakh. He was earlier granted interim bail for cataract surgery at AIIMS and another relief in December 2024.
