Kolkata: The trains in India have evolved a lot since the first passenger train operated in 1853. Today, among the modern trains in our country, the Vande Bharat Express is possibly the most popular and important. The air-conditioned, reserved flagship train connects different cities and has changed the face of the Railways. Till the start of 2025, the Vande Bharat was a chair car train. However, with the introduction of the Vande Bharat’s sleeper version, the dynamics of Indian Railways have changed.

The Vande Bharat sleeper train is touted to be a game-changer for the Indian Railways. As per reports, while the speed of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Express will be less than the Vande Express chair car, in terms of efficiency and comfort, the train will be truly excellent. There will be 16 coaches in the Vande Bharat sleeper trains, including one First AC, 11 Third AC, and four Second AC coaches. Reportedly, the new Vande Bharat sleeper train will surpass even the Rajdhani Express, one of India's premium trains. Speed

The Vande Bharat sleeper train's maximum speed is 160 kmph. The speed is much faster than that of the Rajdhani Express and greatly reduces the travel time.

Improved berths

The Vande Bharat sleeper train's berths are much better compared to those on the Rajdhani Express. The Indian Railways has stated that on the side of each berth in the train, there is extra cushioning for greater comfort.

No dust

The Vande Bharat sleeper train has a gangway which is fully sealed, much like its chair car counterparts. It has been done so that the train's interior remains dust-free.

Upper berths

Climbing to the upper berths of the Rajdhani Express is a troublesome task. On the other hand, there is a special ladder in the Vande Bharat sleeper train to help passengers easily access the upper and middle berths.

Doors

The Vande Bharat sleeper train has automatic doors, unlike the Rajdhani Express. The doors interconnect the coaches, and these have increased the safety of the passengers.

Better safety

The Vande Bharat sleeper trains reportedly have austenitic stainless steel, resulting in more safety and durability compared to the Rajdhani Express.

Toilets

The Vande Bharat sleeper train has a bio-vacuum toilet system which includes modular, touch-free settings, and that make the train's washrooms far better than those in the Rajdhani Express. Moreover, in the AC 1 coaches, there is a shower cubicle.

Fire safety

The fire safety standards of the Vande Bharat sleeper trains are reportedly better than those of the Rajdhani Express. The former complies with EN 45545 HL3 fire safety standards, and all non-metallic components meet the standards. Also, for luggage compartments, there is a fire barrier wall.

Crashworthiness

Crashworthiness is a vehicle's ability to protect the occupants from injury during a crash. Reportedly, the Vande Bharat sleeper train has front and intermediate side crash buffers along with front and intermediate couplers with deformation tubes.
