Chandigarh: Sarabjeet Kaur, a woman from Punjab who went missing in Pakistan, is all set to be brought back to India. She was part of a group that went to Pakistan in November to participate in the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev.
While searching for her, the authorities later found that after reaching Pakistan on a pilgrimage trip, she left the group and converted to Islam. After this she married a Pakistani man, identified as Nasir Hussain of Sheikhupura district in the neighbouring country.
It may be noted that a joint team of the Intelligence Bureau and the local police took Sarabjeet and her lover into custody. Following this, Pakistani officials started a process to deport her back to India. She is expected to enter India via the Attari-Wagah check post. Sarabjeet will be handed over to Indian authorities at the border post.
Speaking to news agency PTI on November 16, a Pakistan police official said, “Kaur contracted marriage with Nasir Hussain of Sheikhupura district, some 50 kms from Lahore, a day after she arrived in Pakistan on November 4 and declared that she converted to Islam and married out of free will.” “The couple has gone into hiding, and police are searching for them,” the official had further said.
Later same month, the couple approached the Lahore high court and alleged that they were being harassed by the police to end their marriage. The couple further claimed that an illegal raid was conducted at their home in Sheikhupura. The court had then asked the police to leave the couple alone.
In her plea, Sarabjeet also claimed that her husband is a Pakistani citizen. She also claimed to have contacted the Indian mission for Pakistani nationality. She has also reportedly changed her name to Noor Jahan. A purported video had surfaced recently, in which she can be seen getting married.
