New Delhi: Dhakeshwari Temple, known to be the largest Hindu shrine in Bangladesh, was first built in the 12th century by the Sena Dynasty’s King Ballal Sen. It is interesting to know that the country’s capital, Dhaka, got its name from Devi Dhakeshwari, an incarnation of Goddess Durga. Researchers believe Dhakeshwari to be a Shakti Peeth, where one of the jewels from the crown of Goddess Sati fell. The Durga idol of this temple in Dhaka replicates the original. The temple’s main building is a brick three-roomed structure in red. Its outer surface is adorned with detailed carvings and terracotta art. A verandah extends from the main entry gate, and four smaller Shiva temples are situated in the northeastern corner of the complex.
Around 800 years old, the original idol was taken to Kolkata’s Kumartuli from Dhaka during Bangladesh’s independence war in 1971. Much of the temple’s architecture was mutilated, and the Pakistani troops used it as an ammunition storage unit during this dark period. However, the then government renovated the temple, and since then, it has become a Hindu pilgrimage destination. During Durga Puja, people build large pandals. These are decorated with designs and often house exquisite images of Durga, who is usually shown riding a lion as she fought with Demon King Mahishasur.

Lalbagh Fort is within walking distance of Dhakeshwari Temple. So, don’t miss visiting this unfinished fort from the 17th century. Commissioned by Aurangzeb’s son Prince Muhammad Azam, the fort’s main attractions include Diwan-i-Aam or Hall of Audience, Hammam or bathhouse, Tomb of Pari Bibi and tranquil gardens. 3. Ahsan Manzil or The Pink Palace
Situated a short drive away, this former residential palace of the Nawab of Dhaka is now a museum. Explore this spectacular spot for its distinctive pink shade and Indo-Saracenic architecture.
5. Curzon Hall
As part of the University of Dhaka, this building displays a unique blend of Mughal and European architectural styles. Originally intended as a town hall, it now serves as a faculty building.
6. Bangladesh National Museum
Not far from the temple, this museum houses an extensive collection of artefacts related to the country’s history and heritage.
7. Sadarghat
This busy river port offers a vibrant and chaotic slice of Old Dhaka life. Witness the constant movement of passenger ferries and boats, and marvel at the sights and sounds of the Buriganga River.
8. Nilkhet
Located close to Dhaka University, this is a hub for book lovers. The area is renowned for its second-hand and new bookstores, offering everything from academic texts to novels.
