Italian luxury brand Prada is launching a special limited-edition collection of sandals in India, inspired by the country's traditional Kolhapuri chappals. Each pair will be priced at approximately €800, or roughly $930.
The company plans to produce 2,000 pairs in Maharashtra and Karnataka. This project represents a collaboration with two state-backed leather development bodies, LIDCOM and LIDKAR, aiming to combine Indian craftsmanship with Italian design and technology.
The initiative follows earlier criticism six months ago when Prada showcased sandals in Milan resembling the 12th-century Kolhapuri style, leading to concerns about cultural appropriation. Prada subsequently acknowledged the influence and engaged in discussions with artisan groups.
The new collaboration seeks to spotlight India's leather heritage, with a stated goal to increase awareness for these chappals. The collection is scheduled to go on sale in February 2026 across 40 Prada stores worldwide and online. A three-year partnership will also train local artisans through skill programmes in India and offer learning opportunities at Pradas academy in Italy.
