History of Trishund Ganesh Temple

Founded by Bhimgirji Gosavi, this temple was built in the time span of 16 years as the construction began in 1754 and ended in 1770. The initial idea was to erect a Shiva Temple but it turned into a Ganpati temple. During the 18th century, the temple served as a spiritual place, a samadhi temple, as well as a practicing school for Hathyogis.

Spectacular architecture

Influence of Rajasthani, Malwa, South Indian, and Maratha can be witnessed in the architecture of the temple that is entirely made of Deccan basalt stone. It has a rectangular shape and a façade similar to many ancient cave temples. The sculptures depict animals such as chained rhinoceroses and elephants, mythical creatures, guardian deities or Dwarapalakas, and dynamic battle scenes. The historical panel also depicts the aftermath of the 1757 Battle of Plassey with a British soldier and a chained rhinoceros. The roof of the temple had multiple Shiva lingas. Lord Ganesh’s idol is carved from black basalt and is embellished with valuable gems. Inside the temple, there are inscriptions in Sanskrit, Devanagari, and Persian, as well as verses from the Bhagavad Gita.
