After ICC gives 24-hour deadline to Bangladesh, BCB president expresses desperation to play T20 World Cup
With ICC not agreeing to their demands of shifting the World Cup venues for them citing security concerns in India, BCB have been left with just an option of travelling to India tom play the marquee event and if they decide against it, they will be replaced by Scotland.
New Delhi: Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Aminul Islam expressed his desperation late on Wednesday evening to play the T20 World Cup 2026 after ICC's final deadline, mentions a report on Cricbuzz. After the ICC board members met earlier in the day, Bangladesh team was finally given the last deadline of 24 hours to convey their decision of travelling to India for the showpiece event beginning February 7.
With ICC not agreeing to their demands of shifting the World Cup venues for them citing security concerns in India, BCB have been left with just an option of travelling to India tom play the marquee event and if they decide against it, they will be replaced by Scotland. Meanwhile, Islam said that they can still take part in the big ICC event if the global governing decides to change their mind and relocate their games.
While Bangladesh's plea was rejected by the ICC, the BCB still has some hopes of help from the Bangladesh government in resolving the issue and allowing them to play in India. As per the report, the Bangladesh government is not ready to change their stance as far as taking part in the showpiece event is concerned. Scotland are tipped to replace Bangladesh in Group C should they fail to comply with the deadline.
Hoping for miracle from ICC: BCB president
'I am hoping for a miracle from the ICC. Who doesn't want to play the World Cup?,' Aminul said. 'We can't really comment after the ICC's press release. The meeting went on for an hour and a half. We explained to the ICC board the reasons for our decision before the voting began. We didn't want to go into voting. We stepped back,' he said.
'The Bangladesh players want to play the World Cup. The Bangladesh government wants Bangladesh to play the World Cup. But we don't think India is safe for our players,' he added.
'We asked them to shift the matches to Sri Lanka. We said that we can switch with Ireland or Zimbabwe. It would have been the easiest way. But Sri Lanka said that we don't want a new team in our group. After the vote, I told them that I want one last chance to tell my government. They said it's a valid point, and gave me 24 or 48 hours to get back to them.'
