New Delhi: Team India all-rounder Washington Sundar has been ruled out of the three-match ODI series against New Zealand after suffering a rib injury in the series opener in Vadodara, reports PTI.

Sundar bowled five overs in the first ODI and walked off halfway through the New Zealand innings, and didn't return to the field on Sunday. Despite the discomfort, the all-rounder came out to bat at No. 8 as India won the match by four wickets.

"Washington has been ruled out due to the onset of discomfort in his left lower rib area," a BCCI official told PTI. Team India's ODI captain Shubman Gill had also given an update on Washington following India's victory.

"Washington Sundar has a side strain and will go for a scan after the match," Gill said at the post-match presentation.

Rishabh Pant ruled out

Washington is the third Indian cricketer to pick up an injury. Earlier, Rishabh Pant was also ruled out of the ongoing series after suffering a side strain. He felt a sudden onset of discomfort in his right lateral abdominal area while batting in the nets during the practice session ahead of the first ODI. The wicketkeeper-batter was taken for MRI scans immediately.

"The BCCI Medical Team had a detailed discussion with an expert on his clinical and radiological findings. Pant has been diagnosed with a side strain (Oblique Muscle Tear) and is subsequently ruled out of the ODI Series," the BCCI said in a statement.

Tilak Varma is also unavailable for the first three T20Is against New Zealand after undergoing surgery for an abdominal issue. According to the BCCI, the middle-order batter was discharged from the hospital on January 8 and is currently stable and progressing well. He will resume physical training and gradually return to skill-based activities after his symptoms have fully resolved, and the healing of the wound is satisfactory.

"His availability for the remaining two matches will be assessed based on his progress during the return-to-training and skill phases," the BCCI said in a statement.

The second ODI of the three-match series will be played in Rajkot on January 14, while the five-match T20I series will start on January 21.
