New Delhi: The first T20I between India and Australia in Canberra was called off on Wednesday due to torrential rain in the capital city of Australia. The game started off smoothly with India dominating the proceedings in batting till the first five overs. It was when rain interrupted play for the first time with India going back to the pavilion at 43/1.

After almost a 45-minute interruption, the players returned back on the field with Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav taking charge for the visiting side after Abhishek Sharma was out 19 before the first break. Both put on a sensational partnership of 62 runs off 35 balls when rain came to halt the play once again.

At 97/1 after 9.4 overs, India went back to the pavilion with the hope of returning soon but rain never stopped prompting the on-filed umpires to call off play. Suryakumar was unbeaten on 39 while Gill scored 37 runs. The second T20I of the five-match series would be played at the MCG on Friday.
