New Delhi: Chelsea have parted ways with manager Enzo Maresca ahead of Sunday's game against Manchester City, confirmed the Premier League club. The development took place after the team's poor run in the ongoing Premier League where it has lost 5 matches in a total of 19 games.

The fifth-placed side has been able to win just 8 games while 6 of their fixtures have ended in a draw. Maresca's 18-month spell at Stamford Bridge comes to an end after a run of one win in seven Premier League games that has pushed his side against the wall in the competition and left their title hopes hanging.

Onn Tuesday at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea were booed off after their match against 15th-placed Bournemouth ended in a 2-2 draw. Manager Maresca faced chants of 'you don't know what you're doing' from fans when he opted to substitute Cole Palmer.

Did Chelsea sack Enzo Maresca?

As reported by ESPN, it has been learnt that the main reason behind his exit from the club is a breakdown in relations with Chelsea's hierarchy, with Maresca having been increasingly public with his displays of dissent towards Chelsea's ownership. Last month, the 45-year-old claimed that he had experienced the worst 48 hours of his time at the club in the build-up to a 2-0 victory over Everton.

The same report mentions that his comments in public took the members of his staff by surprise as he desperately made attempts to clear the air. Meanwhile, Chelsea have not confirmed who will be in the dugout for Sunday's key clash against City, though Willy Caballero is likely to lead the team having filled in for Maresca amid a Premier League suspension.

Maresca, who joined Chelsea in July 2024, was due to run the club until 2029, with Chelsea holding an option for a further 12 months. He guided the club back to Champions League football in his debut season by finishing fourth in the Premier League, as well as lifting the Conference League title and the inaugural Club World Cup.
